THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HURSTVILLE

MAYORAL MINUTE

It is with great regret and sorrow that I inform the Council of the death of Mr Michael (Mick) Croot MBE, formerly of 30 Warraba Street, Hurstville, and most recently of Banks Lodge Hostel, Peakhurst, who passed away on Sunday, 10th August, 1997.

As Council would be well aware, the Late Mr Croot was a significant member of both the Council and the Hurstville community for over five decades, and will be sadly missed by his family, many friends and the community.

Mr Croot was born in 1901 and was a resident of Hurstville for 62 years, having moved to Hurstville in 1935 and being first elected as a Member of Hurstville Council representing Hurstville Ward on 6th December, 1941.

In total Mr Croot served on Hurstville Council for 36 years from 6th December, 1941 to 2nd December, 1944, 17th November, 1945 to 4th December, 1948, and then continuously from 2nd December, 1950 to 20th September, 1980, when he retired from Council and did not seek re-election.

During this long and distinguished career as a Member of Hurstville Council, Mr Croot was also elected as Mayor in 1956, from 1957 to 1959 and, once again, in 1974 for the 1974/75 Mayoral Term.

Mr Croot was also Council's delegate to the then St George County Council from 1942 to 1944, from 1946 to 1948 and continuously from 1951 to 1965, whilst also serving as that Council's Deputy Chairman in 1952/53 and Chairman in 1954/55.

In addition, during this period, Mr Croot served on many Council and Community Committees and groups which would number far too many to individually mention, but I am sure many persons would remember him for his untiring and steadfast support for their activities and his dedication to serving the community which he loved and held close to his heart.

Both Mr & Mrs Croot were part of the driving force behind the formation of the Hurstville Home Nursing Service and the Hurstville Meals on Wheels Association.

In recognition of his immeasurable services to and support of the community of Hurstville Mr Croot was awarded the Member of the British Empire Medal in 1973. Mr Croot worked for the NSW Railways all of his working life. He was awarded life membership of the Electrical Trades Union (ETU).

Even after his retirement from Council in 1980 Mr Croot continued to work for the community that was dear to his heart by being involved in many activities, including serving as a continuing member and Chairman of the Hurstville Senior Citizens Centre Management Committee and a member of the Hurstville Meals-on-Wheels Association until 1988, during which time has was the ongoing Secretary/Treasurer of the later organization of which Mrs Croot was President.

In further recognition of Mr Croot's services to the community, Council presented him with the Keys to the City in 1986.

As can be seen, Mr Croot was not just a significant and notable member of the community, but one of the pillars upon which the Hurstville of today was constructed. He made significant contributions in the areas of the Trades Union movement, National, State and local government politics and the betterment of the local community. Mick Croot will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him and particularly his wife, Flo, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren - he was a great Australian.

A memorial service will be held at St Giles Presbyterian Church, corner MacMahon Street and Park Road, Hurstville at 11.00 am on Thursday, 14th August, 1997, and Mr Croot's family have requested that no flowers be sent to the service, but instead appropriate donations in lieu be forwarded to the Diabetes Association of NSW, GPO Box 9824, Sydney NSW 2001.

In concluding this Mayoral Minute, I would like to place on record the Council's appreciation and recognition of Mr Croot's outstanding service to the Council and the community which he loved and to indicate that he will be sadly missed by all those who were lucky enough to come into contact with Mr Croot during his life.
