The Mayor advised for the benefit of the gallery that the Greenleaves Exchange Program with Council's Sister City in Japan, Shiroishi, had taken place annually since 1994 and had been of great benefit to participants in their Japanese studies; Elizabeth McManus (1994) had won a Highly Commended award for an essay sponsored by the Japanese Consulate and had been the most highly placed student in New South Wales and Nicole Fong (1995) received the Danebank school award for first place in Japanese.

The Mayor said that he was proud to welcome the 1996 Greenleaves Exchange group and noted that unfortunately Kylie Tullipan was not able to attend; the Mayor then presented certificates acknowledging their participation to Rebecca Lee, who was present with her father, Mr Lee, and to Ms Jane Donald, a Teacher at Danebank Anglican Girls' School, who chaperoned the group.

Combined Councils/Community
against Holsworthy Airport Proposal

Councillor J Griffin advised that the program referred to Council previously requesting funding for Option 2 in the sum of $14,200 had been reassessed at a later meeting of the Committee because the level of funding required had not been forthcoming. Councillor Griffin sought consideration as a matter of urgency of a new proposal achievable with a reduced budget of $71,000, involving the same level of contribution, namely $14,200, from the five Councils who had agreed to contribute, the details of which he would table for Members' information. It was proposed that the money would be allocated towards the cost of leaflets and a video ($55,000), Combined Councils/Community organised public rallies' venues and publications ($10,000) and administration costs ($6,000).
